FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ’S) Q: How many students are in the school in total? A: For the 2020-2021 school year we currently have 360 students from 9th to 12th grade.
Q :What are school hours? A: Our school hours are from 8:20 am to 2:20 pm Monday through Friday. During the week, our Teachers offer “Office Hours” to our students to receive additional support in their core classes. Office hours are after school that typically ends on or before 4 pm. Q: Do all students have a dress code or uniform? A: Yes, all of our students are required to wear Dress Code. Students are rewarded with CHA apparel such as our “Moving Up Zipped Sweater” and our Seniors ¾ Zipped Sweater, this is allowed in the Dress Code. Students also have the opportunity to earn “Dress Down Passes” from staff members within the school building. If a student earns this pass, they can select any day to dress down. Seniors also earn a “Platinum Dress Down Pass”, they are allowed to dress down every Friday for the school year. Q: Does my child have to be good with computers to be considered for your school? A: Students that are enrolled in CHA are NOT required to have prior knowledge of Software Engineering or Technology experience. We take pride in providing our students the knowledge of Software Engineering. Q: What is the process in applying to Cambria Heights Academy as an 8th grade student? A: We are an Ed. Optional School which means, we are looking for students who are interested in Software Engineering. We require all prospective students to attend at least one Open House Information Session and to participate in our Software Engineering Workshop. For the 2020-2021 school year, our Open House will be virtual. The students MUST complete the Software Engineering activity and complete the survey at the end of the activity. Then add Cambria Heights Academy to your 2020-2021 High School Application. Q: Where are you located, and what buses and trains are accessible to you? A: We are located at 188-04 91st Avenue Hollis, NY 11423. Our students use the Q3, Q110, and/or Q2 busses or the F train as transportation to and from CHA. Q: I have recently moved to this country and your school is in close proximity to my house-- what do I have to do to enroll my child? A: Students that have recently moved to Queens must go to the Office of Enrollment FIRST to register for enrollment to CHA. You can find more information on the Office of Enrollment by using this link. Q: Do you offer after school activities for students? A: Yes, we offer different clubs each school year. The clubs are provided based on the students interest. However, each year we do offer a Dance, Gaming, Anime, Technology, Japanese and a Soccer Club. Q: What does CTE stand for, and what is it for? A: Career Technical Education, each school provides a specific program. Our school ONLY provides Software Engineering. Q: My student is shy and nervous about entering High School? How do you help incoming freshmen adjust to the changes? A: Being shy and/or nervous about starting a new school are normal feelings to have and we support our students in many ways. During the first week of school, our students engage in a meaningful Orientation week. This allows them to begin the transitioning process from Middle to High School. Our students learn how to navigate High School, learn about the academic expectations and most importantly build a sense of community with other students and teachers. Freshmen also have the opportunity to participate in “Freshmen Fridays”. Once a month (for the first semester) after school, 9th grade students can engage in games, fun activities and enjoy the food that is provided to them at this event. Q: What Colleges are Cambria Heights Academy affiliated with? A: We are affiliated with York College through our College Now program. We are also affiliated with SUNY Farmingdale through our Software Engineering program and Queens College’s SEEK Program. Q: What electives are offered at CHA? A: We offer College Application, Piano, Chorus, Graphic Design, and Robotics. However, our electives do change each year and that is based on student's/teacher's interest. Q: What AP courses are offered at Cambria Heights Academy? Can all students take an AP course? A: We offer AP courses to all of our students as early as their Sophomore year. Students can take at least 2 AP courses during each school year. We offer AP Computer Science, AP Literature, AP World History, AP Government & Economics, and AP U.S. History. Q: What services do you offer to students with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)? A: We offer Mandated Counseling in Individual and Group Counseling sessions, Speech- Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, SETSS and Integrated Co-Teaching Classes. |
